Design

Many different designs were bounced back and forth between Murray & the client to achieve something which incorporated raw timber and fitted into the barn style look. With the area being such a large open space the piece itself ended up measuring 2.4m in length and hanging down 2.4m from the top of the cathedral style ceiling.

The criss crosses were added to the design to keep with the barn look and the give the bulbs something central to sit in. X’s were added to the sides to add a little something extra without going over the top. The X’s also pull the top and bottom runs together.

There is a fabricated steel frame sitting on the top to spread the 40kg weight across the timber top.

Following suit with the rest of the house with black joining plates, the pendant is finished with black lamp holders and black steel tubes. Filament bulbs add the final touch, giving a nice amount of mood light when downlight become too much.

Surroundings

This piece was to fit into a new build house with high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber beams and a country barn style finish. Everything in the house is on a big, grand scale. Outside ceilings are 6m high. The pendant had to be sized to match without becoming too intrusive. Timber was sourced from the same supplier as the timber beams to seamlessly match in to its surroundings.

Install

Due to the size of the pendant it was transported in parts and assembly was finished on site. The 2.4m long rods were threaded onto the frame before lifting up to height. Luckily the builder had two scissor lifts on site which were used in conjunction with each other. The pendant was lifted onto the scissor lift and raised to just below finished height so as the electrical connections could be done. Surprisingly with its sheer size and weight the install went fairly smoothly, or so a time-lapse video would suggest. :)
